Verruca Treatment

Verrucas, also known as plantar warts, are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are commonly found on the soles of the feet. They can be identified by their rough, grainy appearance with black dots in the centre, which are small blood vessels. Often, verrucas resemble a small cauliflower head with tiny black dots.

Although harmless, they can be painful when present on a weight-bearing part of the foot. In addition, a callus can form over the top of the verruca, increasing the discomfort in this area.

Verrucas can be spread through direct contact with a contaminated surface or skin-to-skin contact, and they can also spread to other parts of the body, such as the hands.

The most common places to catch verrucas are swimming pools, changing room floors and communal shower areas, as the virus thrives in moist, damp environments.

Verrucas are contagious and can easily spread to others or to other parts of the body. It is important to avoid touching or picking at verrucas and to practise good hygiene, such as washing hands and feet regularly.

Verrucas may go away on their own, but it can take months or even years for them to disappear. Treatment can help speed up the process and reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others. It is important to seek treatment for verrucas, especially if they are painful or causing discomfort. The most effective treatment for verrucas is SWIFT® Verruca Microwave Therapy, which we employ at Walk This Way Podiatry.

If you or your family are affected by verruca, we highly advise that you consult a podiatrist to avoid spreading the infection to other foot areas. Although there are a number of ointments and gels you can use to treat the virus, it may take months for verrucas to disappear. Professional help will ensure a much more speedy recovery.
